The God Man...Pondering the Paradox

If you had been Peter, chances are you would have denied Jesus too. Peter just couldn't understand what was happening. Jesus had just been seized by the temple guard, and Peter's mind must have been churning with doubt. "If Jesus were the Son of God, why didn't he stop the abuse and mockery he was witnessing in the high priest's courtyard?" "How could someone who is supposed to be divine put up with that?" "Perhaps, after all, Jesus is another sincere but misguided charismatic leader who has overwhelmed his followers with grandiose words and visions and thoughts of invincibility. And if that's the case, I'd better save my own skin while I can." "No," Peter insisted to the courtyard bystanders, "I swear to God, I don't know him!"

Later that day, Peter watched Jesus, now brutally beaten, be nailed to a cross, then jerked upright in the sun to hang and gasp for air, and finally die. If Jesus were the Son of God, how could he die like that?

Peter was just as troubled the following Sunday when he ran to Jesus' tomb to find the body missing. The women told of angels' words that He had risen, but with his own eyes Peter had seen Jesus die. If he were a man--and he certainly died like a man--how could he return from death? Someone must have taken the body. Must have!

Men and women have struggled with this quandary for centuries. If Jesus is God, how could he die? And if he is man, how could he rise?

How can God die, and how can man live? Why, for that matter, was Jesus conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin?

How and why? Because Jesus is God's Son, sent to earth to lead us to our Father, to die for our sins, and to rise from the dead to show us that he is the source of everlasting life. He is the God-Man.

And what is that to me? His shameful death that Good Friday was a direct result of my sins. And His resurrection Easter morning was for me, as well. He died and lived for me. For me...and for you.

project one sixty eight

Project 168 is a challenge for the VCC community to pray. There are one hundred and sixty eight hours in every week – Project 168 calls the members of the VCC community to pray during one of those one hundred and sixty eight hours every week.

Pray for the leadership team of the Limpopo Area Development Project in Zimbabwe. Pray that the Lord would guide them in…

  • Equipping families and communities to care for orphans and vulnerable children while providing life-skills training to those affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
  • Helping farmers increase their yields by providing irrigation materials and training.
  • Improving existing school buildings and providing students with much needed books and supplies.
  • Training child development workers in child welfare and general sponsorship issues to help them better evaluate and monitor the living conditions of sponsored children and their families.
  • Helping families launch and manage small enterprises, such as weaving, welding, or basketry, to increase their incomes.
  • Establishing church leadership teams to support positive community interaction and provide training in congregational development.

 rocky point project

Cracks from swinging hammers, the knocking and scraping sounds of mixing cement in wheelbarrows by hand, and the shuffle of 18 pairs of boots moving like worker ants on the Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) job site were familiar sounds for a group of VCC men who ventured down into Mexico to build a house for a widow and her two children this past February.

Friday morning at 4:30am, after an extremely early wake up, the Rocky Point team caravanned down to Mexico together in trucks and suv's. By early afternoon, VCC's first ever all men's Rocky Point construction team was well underway with the cement slab nearly poured and most of the wood frames nailed tightly together. That night the men headed down to Cholla Bay to have fresh fish, shrimp tacos, and cheese quesadillas.

By early afternoon on Saturday, the men from Vail Christian Church finished construction on a home for a widow and her two children. The woman and her kids were so excited and thankful! That night they slept in a real home with walls and a roof that belonged to them for the first time.

Of course, the weekend in Rocky Point was more then just about building a house. It was a place where the Vail Christian Church men became a team of servants. It was an opportunity for these men to show what being the church is all about.

Throughout the next year, Vail Christian Church is planning to continue to be the church in Rocky Point by identifying even more families that are in desperate need of safe shelter and blessing them by making their dreams come true. Building houses down in Mexico demands a lot of time, money, and physical labor, but what a joy it is to give to families in need. By satisfying a physical need, we are able to demonstrate Christ's love - and that goal is well worth our sacrifice.

Join Vail Christian Church next November when we journey to Rocky Point to serve the men, women, and children in Puerto Penasco, Mexico.

The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time
by Jeffrey Sachs

"Extreme poverty can be ended, not in the time of our grandchildren, but our time." Thus forecasts Jeffrey D. Sachs, director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, whose twenty-five years of experience observing the world from many vantage points has helped him shed light on the most vital issues facing our planet: the causes of poverty, the role of rich-country policies, and the very real possibilities for a poverty-free future. Sachs brings his considerable expertise to bear in the landmark The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time, his highly anticipated blueprint for world-wide economic success - a goal, he argues, we can reach in a mere twenty years.

Glory Revealed: The Word of God in Worship

The idea behind the rootsy compilation album, "Glory Revealed," is to draw listeners into the Word, enabling them to find God's glory revealed in His Word.  A tall but noble task in this frenetic day, but if warmth, well-crafted songs, and intelligent production have anything to do with it, “Glory Revealed” proves effective.
