Missing a Front Right Fender

What do we all want? Pascal said, “All men seek happiness. This is without exception. This is the motive of every action of every man, even those who hang themselves. Only a fool wouldn't want to be happy”.

So how do we go about finding happiness? After working with people for 25 years, I see three universal "wants" that propel peoples’ efforts to be happy.

First, we want something we can give our lives to, like a mission or cause. This is the need to be significant, to make a difference. We want our lives to count. We want it to matter we lived. No one wants to be a shooting star that streaks across the sky one night and then disappears.

Second, we want someone to share it with. This is the need to love and be loved, to be part of a community, to find acceptance.

Third, we want a "system" that offers a reasonable explanation for why 1 and 2 are so difficult. Frederick Taylor, the father of Scientific Management, said, "Your system is perfectly designed to produce the result you are getting." What he meant was that if you manufacture cars and every third car rolls off the assembly line missing a front right fender, your system is perfectly designed to produce that result. Belief systems also "perfectly" produce predictable results.

All anyone needs can be, (and can only be) satisfied in the Gospel of Jesus. He is the cause, He is the someone, and He is the "system" which explains the meaning and purpose of life.  The Gospel of Jesus is the only system that has ever been able to offer an adequate and redemptive explanation for why life is so messy. In the Gospel we find everything we could want to be happy.  But we are often stubborn. We want to give "the world" a try. That's why God has graciously made every system apart from Christianity end in the feeling of meaninglessness.  He does this so that we all will eventually see the futility of any system apart from Jesus Christ.  Not all men will humble themselves and turn to God, but observation and experience tell us that all men will see their systems fail them.

So just exactly what does the Gospel of Jesus (Christianity) have to do with the happiness we want? God will not force a man to revere him, but he will make it impossible for him to be happy unless he does.

30 Hour Famine: In collaboration with our church's partnership with World Vision and Africa, the youth group will be engaging in some projects during the month of August to help those who are suffering from AIDS or hunger. One particular project is called "30 Hour Famine". From 12:00 p.m. on Friday, August 24 until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 25 we will fast and pray. The students will be encouraged to donate any money they would have spent on food during those two days to World Vision's "Starve Hunger" program. $30 feeds a starving child for 30 days. The goal of this project is that we would not only donate money but also experience together a tragedy that many around the world face everyday and be motivated to change it; I believe God will work powerfully in our hearts as we rely on Him and lift up all those who are without food or sick. I'd like to encourage you to consider participating in this event with our students. Please contact me for more information at julie@vailchristian.com.

Strategic Service Teams: SST’s are volunteers gathered together to serve within and outside the church. Volunteers are vital to Vail Christian and we look to them to facilitate environments and potentially lead people in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Contact tim@vailchristian.com or ben@vailchristian.com for more information. You can also visit the Strategic Service Team page on our website at www.vailchristian.com.

If you are interested in starting or joining a Community Group, or if you just want some more information, contact Tim Sheaffer at tim@vailchristian.com or Trent Schlecht at tanks@cox.net. You can also visit the Community Group page on our website at www.vailchristian.com.

What's Happeing

Student Sunday: Our Middle School and High School students have had a fantastic summer! They have been challenged by great speakers, formed lasting relationships, and made important decisions. On July 29, we will highlight our student arena and give our students a chance to serve in the main services. Be sure to join us as our students share their summer experiences with us.

Trailhead...Begin the Journey August 5 during the 10:45 service (BBQ August 12). Trailhead is where the VCC adventure begins. This class will walk you through our core values, our vision, our mission, and perhaps most importantly: opportunities for you to join the journey. Visit the kiosk in the courtyard or email tim@vailchristian.com for more information.

Connect Sunday: On Sunday, August 19, we will shorten our services to celebrate together from 10-11 a.m. in the courtyard with jumping castles, food, games and booths representing different ways to get connected at Vail Christian Church. We look forward to seeing you there as we embrace our mission to make room in life's journey to connect people to God and each other! For more information, please contact Tim Sheaffer at tim@vailchristian.com or (520)722-1220.

Baptism Event: The next baptism event will be August 19. If you are interested in being baptized, please contact tim@vailchristian.com. Students and children please contact julie@vailchristian.com.

We're gearing up to offer a variety of classes on Sunday mornings beginning in the Fall. The classes are designed to help develop growth in your personal faith. The first two classes that will be offered are "Becoming a Disciple" and "Enjoying Your Relationships." Both courses last seven weeks and will be held during the first service. The start date for both courses is August 26. To sign up, contact Tim at tim@vailchristian.com or 520-722-1220. The cost is $7. Watch for more course offerings in future newsletters and on our website. This is a great way to get connected with others and to grow in your knowledge of the Bible.

SoundWave - VCC Children's Choir: Calling all budding singers and actors!  We are excited to announce the launch of VCC's own children's musical group!  Join us this fall as we practice and prepare a musical celebrating the birth of Jesus.  The group is open to children in the 2nd-5th grades.  Registrations will be available starting July 29 at the children's table.  For more information, contact meghan@vailchristian.com.

Rose Canyon Picnic: We are headed up Mt. Lemmon to Rose Canyon on September 16 at 2:00 p.m. for an all church picnic. We will provide the meat and drinks. Please bring a picnic side dish and/or a dessert of your choice. Load up the family and some chairs, and meet us up there. We look forward to seeing you!

Make A Difference Day - October 27: Make a Difference Day is an opportunity for us to reach out to the Vail community and serve our schools. We will be serving several schools by fulfilling their specific needs, such as painting fences and planting trees. Please join your family with ours on October 27 to make a difference in our schools. To join a team and get involved contact tim@vailchristian.com or (520)722-1220.

Rocky Point Mission Trip - November 8 11: We will be gathering our families and heading to Rocky Point, Mexico over Veteran's Day weekend to build some houses with Amor Ministries. We will be camping out and serving families in need of shelter by building them a house from the ground up. Amor Ministries typically builds an 11'x22', two-room home with a slab floor, stucco-finished exterior, two windows, and a door. An Amor house is a simple design, built according to the standards of the community so that a group without skilled labor or power tools can still complete the project. Put the date on your calendar, prepare your family, and sign up. Email ron.andler@gmail.com for more information.

Project 168 is a challenge for the VCC community to pray. There are one hundred and sixty eight hours in every week – Project 168 calls the members of the VCC community to pray during one of those one hundred and sixty eight hours every week.

  • Give thanks to the Lord for His loving kindness.
  • Praise God that He never changes.

  • Pray for the families that live on your street.

  • Ask God for growth in faith and character.

  • Pray that you might rest in the Lord.

  • Tell the Lord of your trials.

  • Pray about your personal worries.

  • Pray one promise from the Bible.

  • Pray that God's will be done in your life, rather than your own.

The Hazards of Being a Man: Overcoming 12 Challenges All Men Face
by Jeffery E. Miller

Miller’s concern is not simply that men do the right things, but that men are the men God has designed them to be.  Grounded in Scripture, Miller uses examples of men from the Old Testament providing practical advice on how to improve behavior in each.  He has a great ability to take an ancient story and bring it into the factory or office today.
