Firstfruits
Long before Christ’s resurrection God instructed His people to keep annual Holy Days and festivals. During one of these festivals, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, God gave them a special ceremony called the wave sheaf offering.
In Israel, before the spring barley harvest could begin, this ceremony was to be done on the first day of the week during the seven day Feast of Unleavened Bread. The first sheaf of barley from the spring harvest was cut and given to the priest, who waved it before God as a special offering. This sheaf represents Jesus' resurrection, His ascension to God's throne, His acceptance by the Father and our hope for salvation.
The firstfruits, the very first part of the crop harvested, this wave sheaf offering shows Jesus' role as the first fruits of the salvation of all mankind.
The apostle Paul makes this statement about Christ in (1 Corinthians 15) “But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead also came through a man. For just as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ's at His coming".
Paul uses the term "firstfruits" to describe the relationship of Jesus Christ and His resurrection to that of all the other believers who will follow Him in the resurrection at His return. Jesus is the first of many who will be resurrected to immortality just as He was!
Jesus' sacrifice makes the harvesting of all humanity possible, and His resurrection begins the harvest. Just as the wave-sheaf offering had to be offered before Israel's spring harvest could begin, so Jesus Himself had to be offered and accepted by the Father as the only acceptable sacrifice for sin—before God's harvest of humanity could begin.
Jesus taught that God's plan for harvesting humanity would begin with Himself. Just before His death He told some of His disciples: “The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you the solemn truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces much grain” (John 12:23-24). He would have to die and, like a seed, be planted in the ground. But through His death and resurrection, ultimately many others would be given life in their own resurrection from the dead.
No one could be harvested to salvation until after Jesus was resurrected. Jesus said “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9:37-38). We must never forget that the death of Jesus Christ is the way God loved us, but we must also remember: We can only be harvested or saved by His life.

More Than An Empty Tomb by Alan Reber
Did Jesus rise from the dead, and if he did, is there evidence for the event? This is more than an idle question, for as Paul says, “And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is futile and your faith is empty” (1 Cor. 15:17).
The evidence begins with an empty tomb. It is hard to deny that there really was an empty tomb where Jesus had been buried. After all, if the women had gone to the wrong tomb as some have argued (and then John and Peter made the same mistake later on), it would have been a simple matter for the people who buried him and had a stake in his staying dead (the Jewish religious leaders), to produce the body - but never did.
As an aside, the very fact that the Gospels place such an emphasis on the involvement and word of women argues for the veracity of the resurrection accounts. In the Jewish world of Jesus’ time, the word of women was not important. For example, women were not allowed to testify in trials. If a Jew wanted to make up a believable story of a Resurrection, they would never have used a woman as a witness!
So we have an empty tomb, but so what? Interestingly, by itself, an empty tomb is at best indirect evidence of a resurrection. Thomas’ reaction in John 20 shows that. In truth, there are any number of ways the tomb could have been emptied. For example, some have argued that the disciples stole the body. Others have claimed that Jesus didn’t really die on the cross; he just passed out, and then revived in the tomb, somehow got out, and then convinced his disciples that he had risen. Grave robber could have stolen the body. I could go on.
The problem with all these possibilities is that they all fall apart for the same reason. No stolen body, no wrong tomb, no mass hallucinations and no made-up resurrection stories can account for either the behavior of the disciples or the amazing growth of Christianity. The disciples were scared and scattered after the Crucifixion. After the Resurrection, they became bold, wiling to die painful, solitary deaths to spread the Gospel. It is inconceivable that they would have acted as they did, or that Christianity would have spread as it did were it not for a real resurrection.
There is much more that could be said of the evidences for the Resurrection. For more in-depth treatment of the topic, see books by Lee Strobel, Simon Greenleaf or Frank Morrison.
