When you take a good look at what the most difficult experiences in life are, transitions are sure to rise to the surface. It doesn’t matter who you ask - no one likes every aspect of change. I think it’s because every transition begins with an ending. We have to let go of the old thing before we can pick up the new one - and this change can’t just happen outwardly. It has to happen inwardly as well, in that place where we keep our connections to people and places that help us to define who we are. This is a hard thing to do - we can be living in a new town, but our heads will be full of all the old things we used to do and be. Have you ever seen those tribal rites of passage ceremonies on the Discovery Channel? Those things where the group facilitates a person's transition from one life-phase to the next with often bizarre looking rituals for clearing the mind of old memories and information? These rites seem completely primitive in our culture, but I think I get what they’re after. It’s like reformatting your computer. You know, the thing you never want to do until you have to.

As human beings we need endings to have new beginnings. Unfortunately, we usually fail to discover this until we have made most of the necessary external changes of a transition. There we are, in the new house or on the new job or in a new relationship, waking up to find that we have not yet let go of our old ties. We're like shellfish that continue to open and close our shells to the schedule of the tide long after we have been transplanted to a restaurant kitchen.

Transition is difficult because deep, lasting change is a process. It rarely happens overnight. There are no shortcuts - because God wants to use our transitions! He wants to transform our hearts, minds and bodies. God is committed to winning hearts and developing character. He is committed because He wants relationship with us. And for that kind of relationship to exist, our hearts have to be transformed. He wants to transform us! It’s something I have to remind myself of over and over again when I’m in the midst of transition. However, even in the midst of wrestling through change, we have to recognize the fact that this is all initiated and enabled by the Spirit of God. It is all about grace, which we receive as we step out in faith and persevere in humility and obedience through our transitions.

Shifting Our Family
by Thom & Cynthia Dusek

As a military family we have experienced a number of transitions through the years. We have also had the unique opportunity to help plant two churches which involved moving from very enjoyable and comfortable churches into the somewhat unknown. These transitions have each brought unique difficulties but have also presented us with some special opportunities.

Six years ago when the Air Force moved us to Tucson we were rather blindsided by the location. I had orders to move from Texas to Louisiana, but right at the last moment, my job transferred to Davis-Monthan. Cynthia had half-joked before the move that she would follow me anywhere except the desert southwest – don’t think that God doesn’t have a sense of humor! However after a few months in Tucson learning to get along without things like grass and rain and trees, we fell in love with the city, the mountains and the people.

We initially attended Pantano Christian Church and truly enjoyed the worship services and kids programs. Our kids were making friends, settling in and we all felt very comfortable. But God had other plans. Thanks to the encouragement of some great friends we took the leap to join Vail Christian. This move was hard on our older kids as they had to leave good friends behind. We spent a good deal of time praying about the move and decided that this was God’s will and that He would help the kids adjust. Over time and through the help of our terrific youth coaches the kids began to blossom in their new church home.

Despite the many challenges that these transitions brought our way, we have always tried to approach them together as a family and God has always been there to enhance the experience. Transitions always stretch us but without them we would have missed the experience of meeting some truly wonderful people.
