Worship and Service
by Pastor Ben Pitney

There is a common assumption that when Christ followers meet, they meet for a worship service. It’s rare to find the idea questioned. While service has come to mean little more than a Christian meeting, there is another sense of the word that is relevant to Christian conversation -- that of service being something done to or for God.

This idea of service is closely linked to worship. For most of us worship is synonymous with singing, with an emphasis on songs that exalt God or express devotion to Him. All of this is valid worship but to restrict worship to words expressed in melody is ignoring the breadth and depth of God presented in the Bible.

Paul says in Romans 15:16 “to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, I serve the gospel of God like a priest, so that the Gentiles may become an acceptable offering, sanctified by the Holy Spirit”.

In the truest sense Paul is performing an act of worship. That act of worship is the offering up of the Gentiles! Put simply, Paul’s service in spreading the gospel among the Gentiles was the offering that He was making to Christ as an act of worship. Bringing people to Christ is considered to be worship!

We do need to reverence God. We need to praise Him and we need to thank Him. However, at least in my experience, I need balance in my understanding of worship and in my acts of worship. I need to serve God in general and in the specific field of reaching others. After all: Christ brought glory to God through the sacrifice of His life. We should bring glory to God by telling our stories and the story of Christ to those we know.

I think Vaughan Roberts, author of True Worship, summarizes it best!
“No worship we offer, whether in praise or in the sacrament, can bring us to God. We depend entirely on the worship Jesus offered when he died on the cross, offering His life as a sacrifice. In Christ we are already in God's presence. There is nothing for us to do except draw near with faith. We do not have to sing for half an hour to draw close to God. We are already close to him if we have trusted in Christ - in fact, we could not be closer to Him.”

Life was never meant to be lived alone, rather God designed us to seek community so we can learn, grow and enjoy the richness of life. At Vail Christian Church, we strongly believe this. That is why we say that we are a church of community groups, not a church with community groups.

If you'd like more information about community groups, contact Connection Pastor Tim Sheaffer.

Serving Vail

What does service look like? I think it’s a question that each of us would answer a little differently. Some would probably say service is something that happens on Sunday mornings - perhaps teaching in a classroom or setting up the auditorium. Some would say it is something that happens in a family - when one member chooses to put aside his own desires in order to bring happiness to someone else. Some would say that service is doing acts in the community that help out others who are less fortunate. All of these answers offer glimpses of what service can be -- but they don’t necessarily make it personal. Check out how one family at Vail Christian Church has made service a part of their everyday life.

Jerry and Windy Benson, along with their two children, Pierce and Grace, are very involved at VCC. Windy teaches a kindergarten/1st grade class in the children’s arena, and Jerry is a part of the Guest Services team that welcomes everyone on Sunday mornings. Recently, their family made the decision to start a community group. Below is their take on service and how they are making that a part of their lives.

“Service is important to our family because we believe in making things happen and not just hoping things will happen.  We know that this takes effort on our half to get involved in areas that need help.  We don't just want to be the "country club" church goers, we want to be part of efforts that help drive and support change for a better future for our church and for our children.

We recently finished meeting with our last community group.  We realized that we were continuing to talk about getting involved in community events with other couples and so we asked ourselves the question: why not start a community group through VCC that can further our mission of service as a family?  Then, to top it off, our challenge card from Student Sunday challenged us to be involved in a service team or start a community group.  We believe God speaks in multiple ways, and this was obviously one of them! There was no interpretation needed here. So we are starting a community group that focuses on doing different service projects in the Vail and Tucson communities.”

This year, Vail Christian Church will be holding two Christmas Eve Gatherings!

First will be our Family Christmas Gathering where we encourage you to bring your kids and the whole family to enjoy a time celebrating the holidays together with Christmas Carols, our tradition of story time with the kids and communion.

Later that evening we will hold a Candlelight Communion Service with contemplative music, scripture, prayer and of course celebrating the Lord's Supper together.

Thursday, December 24th
Family Christmas Gathering - 5:30pm
Candlelight Communion Service - 8:00pm

True Worship
Vaughan Roberts

"Worship never begins with us; it is always a response to the truth. It flows out of an understanding of who God is and what he has done for us in Christ." So Vaughan Roberts writes in his classic, True Worship. This book offers general teaching on the Bible's understanding of worship and leaves us with a challenge to be true worshippers in our daily lives as we trust in Jesus and seek to live wholeheartedly for him.

Praise Habit
David Crowder

If you've always thought of praise as just singing, think again. This book by David Crowder challenges us to rethink our attitude toward praise. Relate to his honest stories and thoughtful reflections on the psalms and learn a new way of looking at praise: that praise is a lifestyle rather than an event.

MuteMath: Armistice

One of the most anticipated albums of the year for their genre, MuteMath's second studio release "Armistice" is an artistic blend of experimental rock and rich lyrics. Tracks like "The Nerve" and "Spotlight" are the high-energy highlights of the album while "Pins and Needles" and "No Response" bring incredible depth to the album as they reflect on living in the tension of being a Christ-follower in a fallen world. MuteMath continues to be one of the most explosive bands to see live and this album does not disappoint.
