There Is A Wall
by Pastor Ben Pitney

Why is it easier to accept the authenticity of the theory of evolution than it is to believe the authority of the Gospels and that Jesus rose from the dead? The evidence for the latter is better. I think it’s because we can believe in evolution without having to do anything about it. Life can go on exactly as before.

But the resurrection is a really different issue. If Jesus rose from the dead, then the claims He made about himself are valid, and the claims He makes about us are valid as well. If this is true, He can’t be ignored. We have to change our minds -- about Him, about God, about ourselves and about everybody else. All kinds of things have to change. Jesus claims that we are all accountable to Him for how we live our lives and that He will decide our eternal destiny on this basis.

Vail Christian Church - Christ's Open Tomb Suddenly there was a severe earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descending from heaven came and rolled away the stone and sat on it.... But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised, just as he said."
- Matthew 28:2-6 (NET)

The implications are profound and practical. Wanting to ignore Jesus is a desire to be independent of God. Rebellious. If Jesus is risen, then Jesus is Lord. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him. This includes the right to govern our lives.

Vail Christian Church - Surrender to Jesus

Behind the wall that keeps us from believing in the resurrection is the reality of facing its significance. I think most people would rather believe it’s false. They want to live life their way, and so the claim that Jesus is still alive is never likely to be widely acceptable. But one day it will be universally accepted! There is another resurrection appearance still to come. The whole world will see it. Jesus, who told of His death, burial and resurrection, predicted that one day He would return.

The Bible looks forward to the day when every knee will bow to Jesus and every tongue will confess Him as Lord. When we see His body, still with the scars on His hands, feet, and side, everyone will be convinced of the truth of the resurrection. I’m sure those who have dismissed or denied this mighty act of God will feel foolish. But it will be too late for them to believe or benefit from it. It is not faith when you have no choice but to accept the truth. Jesus' first coming was to save, but His second coming is to judge the living and the dead. He is coming for those who have already believed in Him -- those who have experienced the power of His resurrection and are looking forward to a new body and living in the new heaven and earth. I hope you are among those in front of the wall when He comes again! Jesus is risen! Jesus is Lord!

Then everyone will see the Son of Man arriving in
the clouds with great power and glory.
- Mark 13:26 (NET)

Scandalous
by D.A. Carson

The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the lynchpin of the Christian faith; these events are firmly established in the Scriptures and are not left open to interpretation. However, there is an amazing irony to the cross that is sometimes left unappreciated. Looking at 5 different texts from the Bible, Carson explores this irony of the king of the universe becoming a crucified savior and brings new understanding to the implications of the cross in the lives of Christ followers.
