Get A Grip!
by Pastor Ben Pitney
"Haven't I commanded you? Strength! Courage! Don't be timid; don't get discouraged. GOD, your God, is with you every step you take." -Joshua 1:9
I love the game of golf! Golf includes some bad breaks we deserve and some we don’t deserve. It’s crazy to think of how often I linger on the impact of a bad break that effects my score for the hole or for the day. One of my good friends calls it ‘the rub of the green.’ I’ve played with others that fault the ‘golf gods.’ It’s golf man!! Pure and simple! There are still some really good breaks out there, so just keep playing one shot at a time. Don’t get so bent out of shape. Go back to your ‘pre-shot’ routine, regain your tempo and set an example for others in your group.

Golf is a sport of etiquette. It’s really an others-minded game. Most will give grace to someone who is learning all this. But there’s a limit! Get a grip on the game. If you’re no fun to compete with, why would anyone want to play with you? This game is meant to be played with others.

I love the great life lessons here. I don’t want to be to elemental here but maybe if we had a “take one day at a time” tempo and a “spending time in God’s word” routine, we might have a better grip on life. God wants to use your whole life regardless of what pressures and challenges you continually face. Those things just keep on coming. Remember that God knows your name. He cares about you and wants to give you His strength and courage. He also wants you to be an encouragement to others because our purpose is to tell the story of Christ.

So many golfers think that strength off the tee and length into the fairway is what the game is all about. It’s really about ‘timing,’ getting the club head square to the intended ball flight at impact. The key to all this is good, consistent posture throughout the swing. Being able to achieve and maintain good posture is a function of fitness and core strength. Maybe today is a good time to evaluate your posture -- life. Life must rest in something outside ourselves -- Jesus Christ. By choosing to follow Him in belief and action we can possess a strong core, based not on our perfection but Christ’s. I think that is how God wants the game to be played.

Strength In Submission
by Meghan James
Submission is a tough word to stomach -- in our culture that prizes self-promotion and
being in charge, the idea of putting someone
else’s desires before our own isn’t palatable. After all, no one really wants to be a servant, right? We want to be the people who have others to serve us! In fact, I suspect that sometimes we hear the word submission and interpret it to mean weakness. Submission is far from weakness, though -- truly being able to put others first requires a strength great enough to overcome ourselves.
Submission is a clear command for Christ followers. The Apostle Paul explains that Christ’s example of submission and love has set the standard for what our actions toward others should be. In Philippians 2 he describes Christ’s love, saying,
“Though he existed in the form of God, he did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, but emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave, by looking like other men, and by sharing in human nature. He humbled himself, by becoming obedient to the point of death -- even death on a cross!”
Paul wants us to understand that because Christ gave everything for us, we should be willing to give up everything for our fellow believers. Christ’s sacrifice was the ultimate expression of love -- how can we call ourselves followers of Christ if we are not following his example in this?
I don’t want you to hear me saying that submission is easy, because it’s definitely not. It’s difficult to put others before yourself on a consistent basis -- and it’s easy to make excuses for why we shouldn’t have to do so. This idea of complete submission to others has been very challenging for me in my life. I have difficulty consistently putting others before myself -- especially when it comes to people that are difficult. At first, I considered this to be something of a character flaw -- nothing more than a little selfishness that I needed to grow out of. But Paul’s words in Ephesians tell a different story -- he suggests that we struggle to submit our will to others because we still struggle to fully submit to Christ. Ephesians 5:21 reads, “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” All submission comes out of a correct relationship with Christ. If we are struggling to submit our will and serve others, it is likely that we do not have a full appreciation and reverence for Christ’s servanthood.
Most of us probably think that we understand the implications of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross -- but are we living like we do? Have we committed our lives to Christ in the fullest sense? Are we willing to surrender our will to him entirely? Are we living examples of his love for others? These are the things that we are called to be as followers of Christ -- we are called to love and to submit ourselves for the benefit of others. This is not a calling of weakness; it demands a commitment to Christ that is so strong that it spills out and colors everything we do.

The Map
by David Murrow
A map, hidden in the gospel of Matthew, is the key to awakening the sleeping giant in the church -- men. Sounds like fiction, but it's true. The apostle Matthew embedded a map into his gospel. History's greatest men, including Christ himself, followed this map. The Map begins as a fictional tale of murder, deception, and greed as three men fight to uncover the most important discovery since the Dead Sea Scrolls. Then, using the tale as a aparable, Murrow shows men what the map looks like, where it is found in the Bible, and how to walk its three ancient pathways today: Submission, Strength and Sacrifice.
