Fuel Consumption
by Pastor Ben Pitney

Do you ever feel empty? I don’t mean hollow - I mean drained, like my fuel tank is on E. You know the feeling - when you’re done, toast, spent, depleted. It happens all the time and I have to refuel or I can’t function. I obviously get this way from expending energy physically and mentally. For the most part, I measure physical and mental fuel consumption accurately, so I know how far I can go before I get to E. But whether I economize or burn it fast, inevitably refueling has to happen.

Running out of fuel is a fact that no one can criticize with any credibility. It’s going to happen. It is the way we are made. I believe like most that it’s actually good for our body and mind to burn fuel. But running out of fuel with no refueling station in sight -- that’s what is ridiculous! Accidents and emergencies will come up for sure because life is filled with those, but poor planning and taking things beyond what is reasonable - that’s unacceptable.

A while back I had a truck that had two fuel tanks in it. When one ran dry and the engine started sucking air, you had just a few seconds to reach under the seat and switch a lever to the other tank of fuel. If you waited too long, air was sucked into the fuel system and it really caused problems.

If you are a Christ-follower, it’s like you have two tanks inside of you. You have a spiritual tank and a flesh tank. If you neglect to fill your spiritual tank each day, you run the risk of drawing fuel from the flesh tank. We have to understand that if your spiritual tank runs dry, it is because of insufficient time spent allowing the Lord to properly fill you up. And when your spiritual tank starts 'sucking air', you won't have to fumble around to locate the switch for your flesh tank . . . the tank switch is automatic!

The fuel inside my flesh tank is some nasty stuff! A partial list of fuel components in that tank are hatred, depression, anxiety, impatience, rudeness, jealousy, self-pity, anger, bitterness, strife and selfishness. I'd much rather fuel my engine from the spiritual tank with its components being Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control. (Galatians 5:22-23) God has designed us to run best when He is providing our fuel. I don’t want to be sucking fuel from the wrong tank. What about you? Do you have the discipline to plan your refueling with God? Christ-followers that do this perform at their highest potential.

It seems as though people in our culture are too often drained and feeling empty. We see evidence of this in the way advertisers market their products promising an easy way to refuel yourself.

WHAT IS "THE CITY"?

“The City” is designed to foster new and existing biblical community. It will help everyone in our church move toward our goals and connect with each other.

HOW WILL IT HELP OUR CHURCH?

“The City” is a safe place for every person in our church to connect with and encourage one another. It is becoming the primary avenue of communication to our teams. It is the way our staff will keep accurate information about all of our people, serving as a self-maintained database. You’ll be able to give to the church online safely and securely through “The City”. Finally, it will build community and enhance relationships in our church.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

Here are some simple steps to get started:

1) Visit vailchristian.onthecity.org/kiosk and signup for your own profile. (Each person needs their own profile - not one profile for a married couple.)

2) On your profile, put a recognizable picture of yourself along with your address, phone number, and other information. (Your personal information can be set to be completely private, but it is necessary to put that information into the system.)

3) Create a profile for your family members.

4) Then, find and join your groups. We have groups set up for service teams, community groups, and even for people in your neighborhood. This is how you can start really using “The City”!

Gospel-Powered Parenting
by William P. Farley

With scores of books on parenting out there, it's important to ask what makes one better than another. Gospel-Powered Parenting is unique in that it presents the gospel as the centerpiece to parenting. Farley asserts that it is not the parents' efforts, prayers, hopes, or dreams that ultimately shape parenting. Instead, it is the good news of Jesus Christ. This is the power that needs to be at the center of all we are and all we do as parents. Here, he illustrates how to apply the gospel to every aspect of parenting.
