Unplowed Ground

I believe New Year's resolutions are worth making. Let me tell you why.

We all need changes. I've heard people who say, "I have no regrets about my life. If I had it to do over, I'd do it the same way again." But that attitude is way too blind and self-serving. There is great power in confession--to ourselves, to God, to others. Owning up to our failures is the first, painful step on the road to something better.

What a great time for reassessment. How did last year go? What do I want to do differently this year? This time of year always reminds me of a passage of scripture, better understood by farmers than Most of us. "Break up your unplowed ground, and do not sow among thorns" (Jer 4:3). It makes sense. The more land you put into production, the more prosperous you'll be. But some of us are stupid enough to try to sow seeds in land overrun by thistles without breaking up the soil and taking care to get out the thorns as they come up. Call it laziness. Call it stupidity. But ask yourself this question? What percentage of your life is producing something of value for God? How much "unplowed ground" do you have that ought to be broken up in this coming year and made useful? The brink of a new year is a good time for reassessment.

New Year's is a time to learn to rely more heavily on the grace of God also. I've met a few self-made men and women and so have you. These people are proud and driven but always seem to have something missing at the core of life. There’s more! And there is another way: beginning to trust in God's help. A secret of life the Apostle Paul gave us: "I can do everything through Him who gives me strength," he said (Phil 4:13,). And God's strength saw him through a lot--through pain, through joy, and through accomplishment.

If this last year, life unfolded with opposition. Maybe you have felt shipwrecked or deserted. Or it seems that projects to which have devoted time, turned to dust before your eyes. You even know you haven’t practiced relying on the Lord as much as you should have.

There is no time like the present to make a New Year's resolution.

 first anniversary celebration

It’s here: our first anniversary! As we look back on our first year as a church, it is obvious that God has been at work in our midst.  From mission trips to community groups, from service teams to the staff, we can see the hand of God at work in the people of Vail Christian Church in a way that gives us cause to celebrate.  So celebrate we shall!  Our anniversary is actually Feb. 5th, but since that’s a Monday, we will celebrate as a body on Sunday Feb. 4th.  Much like a one year old baby’s birthday, it’s the first one (and you can only have one “first”) so you just gotta make a big deal out of it.  So we’re going to have jumping castles and food and a sort of festival feel in the courtyard between services, and on top of that, we’re going to create a sort of “Connection Sunday” format where we will have booths representing all of our community groups and service teams so that we can celebrate the birth of VCC by focusing on our mission as a church: making room in life’s journey to connect people with God and each other.  The services will be shortened that day to allow for more time in between the services to partake in the festivities and afford you the opportunity to peruse the booths and find places to plug into the body of Vail Christian Church. This particular Sunday will be a great opportunity to bring friends and family to experience the VCC culture of celebration and connection. We look forward to seeing you there!!!

The DNA of Relationships
by Gary Smalley
Having already written more than 40 books on relationships and marriage, Gary Smalley returns with a somewhat modified approach in The DNA of Relationships. He uses social science literally and metaphorically to help people involved in various types of relationships understand how to change the factors that cause a breakdown in communication and lead to conflict. Readers will understand their habits and how they create a pattern that often must be broken before healthy communication can be formed. This is a must-read for those seeking to improve their personal connections with spouses, friends, children, siblings, co-workers or neighbors.

America's #1 Christian Men's Magazine! For men who crave adventure and pursue truth; realize that a faith-centered life doesn't have to be boring; want information that is fast, useful and bottom line; want to be challenged to apply biblical teaching to their lives.

Sound of Melodies
by Leeland
Leeland’s “Sound of Melodies” comes onto the scene bearing the burden of massive hype. If their music wasn’t so gloriously effervescent this could be a problem. They live up to the hype and then some with their rich atmospheric music, deeply textured instrumentally moving lyrics. Precocious frontman Leeland Mooring is a prematurely gifted songwriter, putting out a fresh sound that is accessible, distinctive, and stirring. His worship lyrics express the deep truths of grace and redemption with great vitality. Check it out. You will be pleased.
