The Most Important Translation

The Bible has been and continues to be an important book for people all over the world. It is worth considering why this is the case: why people continue to read it for their own benefit, why it continues to be the central component of worship in churches everywhere, why people continue to translate it into different languages, why people disseminate it to as many places and to as many people as possible. One reason is that the Bible is great literature, which has the power to speak like few other books can. The words of the psalms, the life of King David, the teachings of Jesus – every part of the Bible has power as literature to speak to people and move them like few other things can. Another reason is that the Bible has a rich history in this world as a book for all people. People of all different races, countries, backgrounds, and beliefs have found the Bible to be a source of comfort and encouragement for them, despite their different circumstances. But most importantly of all, the Bible continues to be an important book for people everywhere because of its message to us.

Despite its diversity, the Bible has a unified and consistent message: The God who created this world wants to have a relationship with the people He created. They have rebelled against Him and now stand condemned under His judgment. Because He desires a relationship, God has provided a way for people to come to Him and have their condemnation removed. That way is found in Jesus, the one God sent to earth to die on the cross so that all people might have access to Him. Through faith in Jesus and trust in Him for what He has done through His death, a person can begin a relationship with God and continue to grow in that relationship. The God of the Bible is the God who created the universe, and He desires to have a relationship with you. I would encourage you to recognize that the Bible is not merely a book. I believe it lives. It is God’s message to us all, and God continues to speak through it today, drawing people to Himself through His son Jesus possessing the power to bring maturity in their relationship with Him.

The most important translation of the Bible is not from the original languages to English, but from the printed page into your life. It is my prayer that the Bible will first impact you by showing you the way to have a relationship with God and then will change you by showing you how to grow in that relationship.

 community group spotlight

Did you know that we have a VCC community group specifically for single parent families? Karyn Antosh and a handful of other single moms and dads, and of course all of their kids, make up this community group.

Here is what Karyn had to say about the DNA of her group:

“We are a community group open to single Mom's and single Dad's. Our children currently range in ages from 1 year old to 16 years old. We have members from VCC, as well as other churches, and we are always open to everyone.

We are a very accepting and understanding group and we realize that, with the busy schedules of a single parent, it is not always possible for everyone to make it to every meeting. But that’s okay. We stay in touch with each other via email and telephone calls with updates about future events.

We offer each other fun and a chance to spend time together, enjoying our families together in a relaxed God-centered atmosphere. We share dreams and ideas about our families and life. Our intention is to connect with other single parent families and to form individual lasting friendships that extend outside group events.

We are a new group and we are always looking for new adventures, ideas, and members! We recently had a Bar-B-Que and a few picnic outings at the park. We hope to add hikes at Sabino Canyon, camping, and simple things such as games nights.”

If you would like more information about getting involved with the VCC single parent families community group or any other community group, contact tim@vailchristian.com.

 connect sunday

Connect Sunday is coming August 19!

Twice a year VCC rounds up all of our community groups and service teams and lets them show off their groups’ skills, purposes, and enthusiasm for what they do. This August, Connect Sunday is going to be a place of excitement, fun, and connection. From jumping castles and Velcro walls to motorcycles and scrapbooking to Bible studies and BBQs, Connect Sunday will have it all.

This day is not just a blast for the whole family. It is a place to get connected. It is where meeting new people, talking to leaders from the service teams and community groups, and hanging out comes easy.

Connect Sunday will be held between the first and second service. Don’t miss out. Mark your calendar!

Want to get connected now? Contact Tim Sheaffer at tim@vailchristian.com.

What's Happeing

 child sponsorship

So far we as a community have sponsored over 70 children in the Limpopo Area Development Project. This amounts to more than $36,000 per year that VCC has committed to its partnership with World Vision! It has been very exciting to witness how God has been leading our body to give sacrificially to care for His children. If you already sponsor a child, please remember to communicate with him through letters. Your sponsorship shows your child that he is loved and cared for by God, and God's love gives all children great worth. Your letters are an important way to reinforce that message of hope. If you do not sponsor a child and would like to do so, or if you would like more information on VCC's partnership with World Vision in Limpopo, contact meghan@vailchristian.com.

 website & forum

project one sixty eight

Project 168 is a challenge for the VCC community to pray. There are one hundred and sixty eight hours in every week – Project 168 calls the members of the VCC community to pray during one of those one hundred and sixty eight hours every week.

  • Government - Our government establishes and implements policies that have far-reaching influence. Pray that the Lord would grant wisdom, discernment and boldness to those who serve in authority over us.
  • Media - Whether it's news broadcasts, movies, television or the Internet, the media is the most influential center of power in America. Pray for journalists and entertainers to conduct themselves in a responsible manner.
  • Education - The schools and universities of our Nation are the some of the greatest mission fields in the world. Pray for our students to stand strong in a Godless culture.
  • Church - VCC is in a position to impact our community for eternity. Pray for your leaders, asking God to grant them the wisdom and vision to lead the Church to be a vessel for healing and hope.
  • Family - The family is one of VCC's greatest assets. Pray daily, not only for the institution of the family as a whole, but for individual families within your circle of influence that may be struggling.

 jennifer jones

Introducing the newest member of the VCC Staff - Jennifer Jones, Accountant...

"I was born and raised in Ventura, Cailfornia. I married George "Jay" Jones in 1993, while he was serving as a Seabee in the US Navy. Jay is now a Branch Manager with a rental company, "Rain For Rent" and still serves our country as a US Navy Reservist. We have two children; Jayleigh (an 8th grader) and Jacob (a 5th grader).

My hobbies would have to be our children. Our daughter is a dancer who keeps us busy with dance 8 hours a week. Our son plays football and baseball and his activities take up the remaining hours.  I couldn't ask for anything more fun than to support our children in doing what they love.

I have been a bookkeeper since I was 15 years old. In Colorado I worked for LifeBridge Christian Church as a bookkeeper for 4 years. We moved to Arizona in 2003. I have worked with the Vail School District and Edward Jones Investments. When Vail Christian Church opened, I joined the Accounting Team and emailed my resume to Ben asking him to consider me when Vail Christian Church was ready to hire a bookkeeper. I am grateful and excited for this opportunity to serve God again in more ways than one!"

A Testament of Devotion
by Thomas R. Kelly

Since its first publication in 1941, A Testament of Devotion, by the renowned Quaker teacher Thomas Kelly, has been universally embraced as a truly enduring spiritual classic. Plainspoken and deeply inspirational, it gathers together five compelling essays that urge us to center our lives on God's presence, to find quiet and stillness within modern life, and to discover the deeply satisfying and lasting peace of the inner spiritual journey. As relevant today as it was a half-century ago, A Testament of Devotion is the ideal companion to that highest of all human arts-the lifelong conversation between God and his creatures.

Holy Discontent
by Bill Hybels

What is the one aspect of this broken world that, when you see it, touch it, get near it, you just can¹t stand? Very likely, that firestorm of frustration reflects your holy discontent, a reality so troubling that you are thrust off the couch and into the game. It¹s during these defining times when your eyes open to the needs surrounding you and your heart hungers to respond that you hear God say, "I feel the same way about this problem. Now, let's go solve it together!"
