Dear [fname], Check out what's happening at Vail Christian Church this month...

A DEEPER, MORE VIVID LIFE

When I was in my early 20’s
, I was required to read a book entitled Shantung Compound by Langdon Gilkey. It is the journal of a young man who was forced into an internment camp together with 2,000 men, women and children on the mainland of China during WWII.

Shantung Compound
is a book about community.  Christians and non-Christians are thrown together to live in close quarters for an indefinite period of time. Gilkey arrived there as a non-Christian teacher and left having met God, in spite of the dishonesty, legalism and hypocrisy of the Christians he met in the camp. Langdon Gilkey met God in community. He writes,

“This common experience… has more than anything else, led men to speak of the Providence of God and to believe in His universal creative presence…and strangely, this divine activity provides the possibility for a new departure, a more vivid life, and a deeper joy than could have been provided by the life I had myself intended.”
A deeper, more vivid life is what people find when they struggle to live in community. Small groups aren’t easy. The intimacy they demand doesn’t come without risk. The truth people in your community group speak isn’t always painless. And let’s not forget about the time and life arrangement it takes to make it worthwhile. But the depth that a healthy group brings into your life cannot be matched in any other way.

Maybe it’s time to consider starting or being apart of a community group!  It will change your life.

Strategic Service Teams: SST’s are volunteers gathered together to serve within and outside the church. Volunteers are vital to Vail Christian and we look to them to facilitate environments and potentially lead people in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Contact tim@vailchristian.com or ben@vailchristian.com for more information. You can also visit the Strategic Service Team page on our website at www.vailchristian.com.

So far we as a community have sponsored over 70 children in the Limpopo Area Development Project. This amounts to more than $36,000 per year that VCC has committed to its partnership with World Vision! It has been very exciting to witness how God has been leading our body to give sacrificially to care for His children. If you already sponsor a child, please remember to communicate with him through letters. Your sponsorship shows your child that he is loved and cared for by God, and God's love gives all children great worth. Your letters are an important way to reinforce that message of hope. If you do not sponsor a child and would like to do so, or if you would like more information on VCC's partnership with World Vision in Limpopo, contact meghan@vailchristian.com.

Congratulations to the following people, who were baptized on August 19:

             Richard Pleake
             Susan Seeloff
             Christina Espinoza
             Darian Peele
             Megan Croft
             Elliette Owens

"I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." Galations 2:20

What's Happeing

Welcome, Chris & Erica McLaughlin! The staff and elders of Vail Christian Church are excited to announce that Chris McLaughlin has been hired as the new Worship Leader.

Hailing from Lancaster, California, Chris describes himself as a "leader," a "visionary", and an "artist." Chris holds a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Ministry/Biblical Studies from Azusa Pacific University. He has worked as a Director of Youth Ministries and a Worship Leader/Musician.

Chris and his wife Erica have a 2-year-old daughter named Taylor and are expecting baby #2 (a little sister for Taylor!) in late November.

Chris' favorite hobbies revolve around art and music (recording, writing, illustrating, etc.) and movies. Erica loves to read fiction novels (and has a knack for finding errors in them as she reads) since she received her undergraduate degree in - you guessed it - English. Together, they love playing board games and card games with friends.

Chris had this to say about their upcoming move to Tucson and into the VCC community: "We're both really excited about moving out there for a lot of reasons. I think most of all we're excited to build some great friendships. I think community is really important to our family and to be in an environment where others are committed to that idea as well is very exciting for us."

The McLaughlins are hoping to move to the Tucson area in mid September and their first official Sunday at VCC will be September 23. Please join us in celebrating their arrival.

Classes Starting in September:

Crown Financial
– The small group study is a 10 week in-depth study of what scripture teaches about money and possessions.  Graduates have confirmed that marriages are being strengthened and individuals are finding their way out of debt.  They are also becoming consistent savers, generous givers, and prudent consumers. Most importantly, people are entering into a closer relationship with Jesus Christ as they learn to apply His Word.  The class starts September 9th during the 9:00AM service.  Cost is $55 for an individual; $65 for a couple.

Biblical Portrait of Marriage – From sex to spirituality, from in-laws to God’s laws, this class addresses couples at every level of maturity and happiness.  Whether married for five months or fifty years, spouses will come away with a clear prescription for making their marriage a true problem-solving partnership.  The class starts September 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the home of David and Nancy Stiffey.  Cost is $20 per couple.

Sign-up sheets for classes are located at the information table in the back of the auditorium.  For more information, please contact Tim Sheaffer at tim@vailchristian.com.

SoundWave - VCC Children's Choir: Calling all budding singers and actors!  We are excited to announce the launch of VCC's own children's musical group!  Join us this fall as we practice and prepare a musical celebrating the birth of Jesus.  The group is open to children in the 2nd-5th grades. Registration forms are due by Sunday, September 9, and can be turned in at the children’s table or filled out online.  For more information, contact meghan@vailchristian.com.

Rose Canyon Picnic: We are headed up Mt. Lemmon to Rose Canyon on September 16 at 2:00 p.m. for an all church picnic. We will provide the meat and drinks. Please bring a picnic side dish and/or a dessert of your choice. Load up the family and some chairs, and meet us up there. We look forward to seeing you!

Trailhead...Begin the Journey October 28 during the 10:45 service (BBQ November 4). Trailhead is where the VCC adventure begins. This class will walk you through our core values, our vision, our mission, and perhaps most importantly: opportunities for you to join the journey. Visit the kiosk in the courtyard or email tim@vailchristian.com for more information.

Rocky Point Mission Trip - November 8 - 11: We will be gathering our families and heading to Rocky Point, Mexico over Veteran's Day weekend to build some houses with Amor Ministries. We will be camping out and serving families in need of shelter by building them a house from the ground up. Amor Ministries typically builds an 11'x22', two-room home with a slab floor, stucco-finished exterior, two windows, and a door. An Amor house is a simple design, built according to the standards of the community so that a group without skilled labor or power tools can still complete the project. Put the date on your calendar, prepare your family, and sign up. Email ron.andler@gmail.com for more information.

Project 168 is a challenge for the VCC community to pray. There are one hundred and sixty eight hours in every week – Project 168 calls the members of the VCC community to pray during one of those one hundred and sixty eight hours every week.

  • Pray for Chris, Erica and their family as they move to Tucson and adjust to a new home, climate and job.
  • Pray about your involvement at VCC. Ask God to prepare your heart for service and to direct you as you seek to serve Him.
  • Consider the people in your spheres of influence...at your workplace, in your neighborhood, among your friends. Ask God that He would guide you to "be the church" to those people.

Just Walk Across the Room
by Bill Hybels
Starred Review. Evangelism is as simple and as scary as walking across the room, according to Hybels, well known senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Ill. His heartfelt burden for sharing the Christian message is clear as he guides readers to a new understanding of why and how they can help others meet God. Readers will find inspiration and honesty in this book that mirrors Hybel's personal convictions and those of his church as well: "It really is true: the spread of the gospel... boils down to whether you and I will continue to seek creative ways to engage our friends, inviting them to explore the abundance of the Christ-following life...."

Buckingham shows you how to seize control of your assets and rewrite your job description under the nose of your boss. The Alter and the Door
Casting Crowns

Casting Crowns third album, The Altar and The Door, draws on this first-hand ministry experience with real people, real life struggle and the faith that overcomes. At the altar, everything makes sense, says Hall. When we're in the church and spending time with God, we know what we're supposed to do and how to live. Everything is black and white. But somewhere between the altar and the door, when we leave and go out into our lives, it all leaks out. Everything gets gray again. It's like we have these two lives, and the Christian life is the journey between the altar and door....trying to get the things you've got in your head, into your hands, into your feet, and into your life. This album is all about that journey of realization, the struggles we encounter and the victory of seeing it as possible.
